Night & day on São Jorge island. Which is your favorite?

This is the town of Velas, seen from our local hotel across the bay. It’s a great starting point for the endless hiking trails around this mountainous island. (More about São Jorge and this spot in my Azores itinerary, on the blog soon.)

Just starting to go through my photos from the #Az

Just starting to go through my photos from the #Azores and wanted to share a few! Any favorites? These are from the island of São Jorge.

These islands made me think of Iceland meets Ireland, with warmer waters. Black volcanic rock. Saturated greens. Quiet. Stunning landscapes in every direction you look. A real under-the-radar gem for nature lovers or anyone who just wants to get away from it all (not for nightlife lovers though. Emphasis on the quiet. 🤫) Plus fantastic seafood.

That view tho! 🤩😂 What do you think — is it worth the price, just to be in Manhattan?

If you’re planning to visit NYC, do yourself a favor and check the dates for major events like Fashion Week before booking. (And SAVE this post for the list.)

Don’t get me wrong, I love this city, even though it’s never a very affordable place to visit. But hotel prices really surge during these times:

- New Year’s Eve 🪩
- Christmas time 🎄
- Pride week – late June 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
- Thanksgiving weekend near the Macy’s parade route 🦃
- NYC marathon week — early November 🏃‍♀️
- Fashion Week – September & February 👗(That’s when I was there – accidentally! I was on my way back from a blogging trip in the Azores, and just needed to be near the train station.)
- Autumn in general 🍂

Wow, after a week in the Azores, this just seemed so fitting. If you’re looking for a place to go disappear, turn your phone off, and spend some time with nature, these islands are an amazing place to start.

(SAVE this if you’re planning an Azores trip & share it with the people you want to escape with!)

The basics:

- The Azores are part of Portugal. 🇵🇹 They’re a group of 9 volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

- 💰 They’re extremely unbusy & affordable for being part of Western Europe.

- This is a nature destination – NOT a mass tourism destination. Go for the hiking, volcanos, whale watching, diving, swimming holes, and fresh seafood. 🌋 🐋

- (There’s no night life & very few sand beaches. Just soothing green everywhere.)

- Several direct flights from North America on @sataazoresairlines_official (ad) from Toronto, Montreal, Boston, JFK, and Oakland – mostly on new A321 Neo LR planes. ✈️ (SATA has one of the newest & most fuel-efficient fleets in Europe. They sponsored my trip out there.)

- Of all the places I’ve traveled where I speak at least a bit of the local language, this is where people seemed to appreciate it the most. 🗣️ It’s worth the effort to learn some Portuguese before you go!

- Winters get cool & rainy, but this would be a great last minute trip before mid-October. (Or wait until May or so.)
