Give me Mexicans in an emergency any day. 🇲🇽❤️ Calm, efficient, friendly, I swear these people can handle anything.

We got SO lucky - Hurricane Simon headed back out to sea, so we’re missing it here in Puerto Vallarta. On Friday and Saturday, the eye of the storm was pointed right at us. 🌀

👋 Hi, I’m Ketti. I have a master’s degree in sustainability and post about climate, adventure travel and realistic sustainable travel advice. If you’re into those things, welcome.

I’m one of 100s of millions of people in the path of a hurricane this weekend, and I’m seeing first hand how these decisions aren’t as easy as people like to assume they are from the outside.

Don’t judge, it’s my first hurricane. 🌀

But this kind of decision is just going to become more and more common for travelers (as it already is for anyone lives in a hurricane zone).

The news is calling it a“Tropical Triple Threat:”
- hurricane Isaias in the Gulf of Mexico
- Hurricane Simon in central Mexico 🇲🇽 (where I am)
- and tropical storm Rachel in California

🌡️ Fun fact: The Niño 3.4 (a measure of average sea surface temperature in the central Pacific Ocean) went above 30 degrees C (86F) for the first time in recorded history this week.

Trust me, the ocean felt bizarrely hot. 🥵

TW: SA statistics. Luckily, there’s no gruesome story in this post.

I don’t think anyone means to offend when they ask me, “but is it safe where you’re traveling?”

But it always makes me think about the assumptions they’re making, and the questions they’re not asking.

Do we ever ask the same thing about familiar, “developed,” “educated,” wealthy, white places, where safety, as women know well, is a hope and an illusion more than a fact?

Inspired by an excellent post from @trippinwithmads on this topic. 👏

I argue with my husband a lot when I’m feeling stressed and emotional about something, because he always wants to give me a solution. But in those moments, I don’t want a solution. I want him to just commiserate.

And maybe that’s what I’m doing now - offering a solution, when a lot of people just need to feel their pain acknowledged. I’m sorry if I’m pushing you into solutions thinking. (I blame Climate Week, the thing I hoped to be thinking and posting about now.)

Hi I’m Ketti, I normally post about sustainability & climate solutions & sustainable travel, but this week it feels wrong to ignore this.

Climate Week NYC: what it’s really like & tips for newbies!

This is my first year at Climate Week and my first take away is that it’s paradise for extroverts. I’ve met lots of fascinating people!

And there are FREE ONLINE CLIMATE EVENTS happening this week, too, if you want to get involved!

And I’m wondering how much sense it makes that this is still held during the same week as the UN General Assembly (making hotel prices 0BsCěNe), now that Climate Week very much its own thing. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Have you been to Climate Week? Do you want to go?

Our climate conclusion DOES NOT have to be the one

Our climate conclusion DOES NOT have to be the one I ended on after watching this art. Here’s why ⤵

I’m a travel creator with a master’s degree in sustainability, and I see climate change allegories everywhere…

💡 BUT not enough people know that we already have scientific solutions to ~ 95% of climate change.

The challenge is implementing them, ie. 🗳️ & 💰 .

🎥 This is “The Raft,” a 2004 video art installation by Bill Viola, who’s considered a pioneer of the genre.

📍 I saw it at the Almaty Museum of Arts in Almaty, Kazakhstan! 🇰🇿 (A city I’ve fallen in love with and will be sharing lots more about!)

Leave home, get out of your comfort zone, wear the wrong shoes, pack the wrong bag, choose a destination you don’t know anything about.

(Ha, see a couple reels ago for how seriously I took that. 😆)

You only find out what your limits are by exploring them.

Take a deep breath.

Remember, nothing has to be perfect.

This world is so diverse and full of places you have no idea exist and people who are surprisingly, beautifully, profoundly, a little bit the same everywhere you go.

It’s NOT as scary as it sounds and you can do things that you never expected. Just give yourself a chance to try and get lost on this map.
