This was a complete and total accident. A huge mess. We were almost actually stuck. 🚴‍♀️ And yet, getting covered in mud and getting my hands dirty was one of my favorite moments of our first group trip. (Hoping the entire group agrees with me… at least in hindsight.🤞)

But even in the muck, we felt safe – we knew our guide, Marco @basecamp523 , was going to get us unstuck. (He did, with several route changes.)

And this is what I love the most about experiental travel – because who remembers to play in the mud at home?

Story time: The situation with Hurricane Helene in North Carolina & other states right now is making me think of this moment – as we were riding into a big storm on our group bike trip in Italy.

We got extremely lucky, basically diving through the eye of Storm Boris, which caused damage all over Europe, before arriving in Italy about the same time as our group of travelers.

As we altered our route to miss the worst of it (shout-out to our guide, Marco @basecamp523 ), our trip continued. As tourists, it doesn’t take much more than a good attitude + a spritz at the end of the day to call a storm an adventure (see biking through mud content, coming soon).

But all around us, it kind of felt like the sky was falling. It was scary to see, as roads were getting washed out, schools shut down, hundreds of people evacuated, train services stopped, and lives lost.

Yes, this extreme weather is part of a changing climate.

SO what can we do about this as travelers? 1️⃣ I’ve shared lots of tips about how to reduce your carbon footprint while traveling & organizations to support (eg: @tomorrowsair_ ). 2️⃣ Right now, sending money to local relief orgs in is the best help we can give.

3️⃣ Longterm, the biggest thing we can do is VOTE for candidates who understand climate change & support transitioning to a lower-carbon economy. In the US, that means voting for Kamala Harris & Tim Walz. I’m proud to say I will be. Vote early if you can. If you’re not registered yet, TODAY’S the day.

(Because DID YOU KNOW that the tech needed to fix about 95% of climate change **already exists**? It’s truly a matter of political will & funding and WE DON’T HAVE TO JUST LIVE WITH THIS.💚)

In just a couple days we’ll be starting our trip

In just a couple days we’ll be starting our trip HERE with our little group of e-bikers! 🚴‍♀️

Over the past year+, we’ve put so much time & love into planning this trip together with Marco, our local guide from @basecamp523 .

📍And I’m so proud to be bringing 7 people from the US to the Marche region — a rural area of Italy that’s totally off the beaten path for American travelers, and actually wants more visitors.

(Unlike Venice, for example, just about 200 miles north, but a world away in terms of tourism, and flooded with more visitors than it can reasonably, sustainably handle.)

Can’t wait to share more!
